2 died, 3 hurt in Maguindanao town clan warJune 2, 2021
MAGUINDANAO – Two persons have died while three were hurt in running gunfights between two feuding clans in Montawal town Tuesday.
In separate statements Wednesday, the Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO-BAR) and the Army’s 6th Infantry Division said Noah Abel and Dataya Bacana led the fight of the rival clans.
The feuding clans, police said, squabbled for ownership of strategic swaths of lands in Barangay Nabundas in Montawal.
Brig. Gen. Eden Ugale, director of PRO-BAR, said Wednesday he has directed the Maguindanao provincial police to help in settling the dispute.
Ugade feared the clan war might displace civilians.
The Montawal municipal police said local and religious leaders have repeatedly tried but failed to end the clan war.
Tuesday’s gunfights in Barangay Nabundas had exacted fatalities on both sides.
The initial exchange of gunfire had killed two and injured three others, according to the local police.
Major Gen. Juvymax Uy, commander of the 6th Infantry Division, said Wednesday the 602nd Brigade in Carmen town in North Cotabato, has helped initiate back channel efforts meant to defuse the tension.
Uy said the military unit in the area will not hesitate to flush the feuding clans out if they do not accede to peaceful intercessions for them to stop the hostilities.
Datu Montawal, a fifth class municipality in Maguindanao, has a population of 34, 820 per 2015 Census of Population. The town, formerly known as Pagagawan, has 11 barangays.
