“Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or duty. It should be offered to them as a precious gift.” If only this famous quote be understood heartily by every mentor, parent and child, then reading will be as interesting as a surprise gift unknown to everyone.

As this year’s another Deped thrust being launched, this Brigada sa Pagbasa brought so much hope for the nation’s deteriorating reading competence by our learners.

Brigada sa Pagbasa aims to cultivate a culture of reading among learners and help those who need further assistance in developing their literacy and numeracy skills. It also assists learners from indigent communities and last-mile schools who are marginalized, excluded and underprivileged.

This program will not be possible without the partnership of the community and other agencies. We are thankful enough that a lot of people have shown concern and cooperation around the locality thus helping the teachers in promoting reading awareness and reading sessions directly to our learners.

Judelyn D. Pomicpic is Teacher III at Ipil Central Elementary School in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay.
