6 hurt in grenade blast in politically-troubled Maguindanao town

Six voters were hurt when a 40 millimeter grenade projectile fired from a distance landed and went off in a school campus in Datu Piang town at past noontime Monday, May 9.

Six people waiting for their turns to get into a polling precinct at the Datu Piang Elementary School in Barangay Buayan were hurt in the blast that ripped through the campus and caused panic among hundreds of voters.

Col. Jibin Bongcayao, Maguindanao’s provincial police director, identified the victims as Lebe Calunting, Satar Andoy, Aladin Kusain, Nasser Guiali, Anib Kanakan and Ukal Guiali, who sustained shrapnel wounds in different parts of their bodies.

They were immediately rushed to the Abpi Emergency Hospital in the town proper.

Bongcayao said investigators from the Datu Piang Municipal Police Station are certain the bombing was politically motivated. He said they have enlisted the help of members of the multi-sector Datu Piang peace and order council in identifying the culprits for immediate prosecution. (John Unson)
