Army overrun NPA camp, 5 rebels wounded

Army soldiers have occupied Sunday, May 15 a New People’s Army (NPA) enclave in Bacuag, Surigao del Norte after a gunfight forcing the rebels to abandon the area carrying five wounded comrades.
Three of the five wounded NPAs were identified only as Neil, Zandro and Ramon.
Government troops belonging to the Army’s 30th Infantry Battalion launched the operation that resulted in their takeover of the NPA encampment in a secluded area in Barangay Pungtod, Bacuag after vigilant tipsters reported their presence collecting “protection” money from villagers.
Lt. Col. Ryan Charles Callanta, commanding officer of the Army’s 30th Infantry Battalion and the Surigao del Norte Provincial Police confirmed that soldiers found in the encounter site a 5.56 AR 15 rifle and a 40 millimeter grenade launcher tube that can be attached to an assault rifle.

The NPAs also left behind ammunition of assorted calibers and other personal belongings as they fled in haste carrying their five wounded companions. (John Unson)
