MAGUINDANAO, Philippines

Men with assault rifles aboard five vehicles attacked a market in Sultan Kudarat on Tuesday, July 12, hurting four people and sending marketgoers running for their lives.

Col. Christoper Panapan, Maguindanao’s police director, said on Wednesday personnel of the Sultan Kudarat Municipal Police Station are still trying to determine the motive of the attack.

Responding local police personnel engaged the gunmen in a brief gunfight that left three of the gunmen wounded.

The police identified the wounded suspects as Mojamer Abdulkarim Esmael, Oting Sanday, and Nasser Esmael.

The trio are now in a hospital, guarded by policemen.

A bystander, Bryan Khalid, who was caught in the ensuing crossfire, sustained a bullet wound in the arm.

The suspects reportedly arrived at the market site in Simuay Junction area, disembarked from their vehicles and searched for Barangay Chairman Guiaber Dalindingan.

Failing to locate Dalindingan, they vented their ire on frantic people around and fired their rifles indiscriminately, according to witnesses.

Dalindingan, chairman of Barangay Simuay, is reportedly locked in a deep-seated animosity with a local partisan group, sources said.
