A road crash in Pitogo, Zamboanga del Sur involving an Izuzu Elf truck had left eight people killed and eight others severely injured Sunday, March 15.
The Pitogo police had identified the fatalities as Rey Alfornon, 24; Orlando Sabejon, 44; Noel Cabellon, 19; Berlindo Labador, 34; Edwin delos Santos, 70; Marvin Hemang, 30; Louie Jay Omandam, 34; and Ranniel Ermac, 15.
The police have yet to identify those who were injured.
Police investigator Master Sergeant Faustino Begontes, Jr. said the victims were all employees of the truck owner, a certain Gaudencio Capre.
Begontes said the truck, driven by Leolito Tam, was carrying timbers along with the 16 workers.
Upon reaching Barangay Liguac at around 2:15 p.m., the truck had apparently experienced mechanical trouble before it fell on a ravine.
The driver, who had escaped uninjured, had surrendered to the local police station after the road crash.
Pitogo emergency responders had brought the injured workers to a hospital in Margosatubig, Zamboanga del Sur.
Begontes said the driver will face charges of reckless imprudence which resulted in multiple homicide and multiple injuries. (Mindanao Sun)
