MAGUINDANAO – A brief shootout between the suspected gun owner and the police has resulted to the killing of the suspect and wounding of a policeman in Montawal town on Friday.

Agents of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (CIDG-BAR) had to neutralize the recalcitrant Saidali Sansaluna. The suspect grabbed the pistol of Patrolman John Paul Quitoriano and shot him in the butt.

The agents returned fire when Sansaluna wounded Quitoriano in the butt, killing him on the spot.

Police Major Esmail Madin, provincial officer of CIDG-BAR for Maguindanao, said they were to peacefully search for firearms in the house of Arman Maulana in Barangay Bulit in Montawal in Maguindanao. The operation, however, turned awry when housemate Sansaluna resisted, provoking a gunfight.

Authorities tagged Maulana a.ka. Astron Maulana in criminal activities in the municipality and nearby areas in North Cotabato province.

The operation targeted Maulana and Sansaluna after tip-offs from neighbors privy to their possession of unlicensed firearms.

The agents involved in the search operation had a warrant issued by Judge Allan Edwin Bongcavil of the Regional Trial Court Branch 19 in Sultan Kudarat province.

Units of the Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO-BAR), the provincial and municipal police assisted the operation.

CIDG-BAR agents recovered in the house they raided a 12 gauge shotgun.

Datu Montawal is a fifth class municipality in Maguindanao. It has a population of 34,820, according to the 2015 Census of Population.
