Cotabato City, Philippines

Two feuding Moro groups that figured in a clash in Lamitan City on Tuesday, August 30, have disengaged to pave the way for mediation by local authorities.

A member of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) was killed in a clash with adversaries identified with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) on Tuesday morning in Sitio Bacud, Barangay Parangbasak, Lamitan City.

Classes in two schools in the area have been suspended since the fight erupted, according to city officials.

Brig. Gen. John Guyguyon, director of the Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO-BAR), told reporters the Lamitan City Peace and Order Council chaired by Mayor Roderick Furigay and the city and provincial police forces are now trying to resolve the dispute among MNLF and MILF members in Barangay Parangbasak.

He said Basilan Gov. Jim Salliman has dispatched emissaries to both groups to help put closure to the conflict.

The deep-seated animosity between the two groups reportedly started after MILF members confiscated weeks prior assorted firearms and shabu from an MNLF member, Rey Disala, a resident of Barangay Parangbasak.

The seized firearms and shabu were immediately turned over to the police in nearby Tipo-Tipo, Basilan.
