COTABATO CITY – Gunmen killed a barangay chairman who was tough on drug dealers and his wife in an ambush in nearby Parang town in Maguindanao del Norte Monday, January 30.

Abobacar Abdul, chairman of Barangay Polloc in Parang, and his spouse Baisa, died from gunshot wounds in different parts of their bodies.

Abdul was popular for his hardline stance against the trafficking of narcotics in his barangay and was an overt supporter of the police’s campaign against the smuggling of Indonesian-made cigarettes into Maguindanao del Norte via the seaside areas under his jurisdiction.

Major Christopher Cabugwang, Parang municipal police chief, said Tuesday, January 31, the victims were together in a white Toyota Hilux pick-up truck, en route to somewhere when they were attacked by gunmen at a secluded stretch of a highway in Barangay Sarmiento.

Cabugwang said investigators are still trying to identify the culprits and determine their motive for the fatal ambush of the couple. (JOHN UNSON)
