Sibugay town government spearheads river clean up, unclogs riverJune 5, 2019
IPIL, Philippines — At least a portion of the Sanito River of this town in Zamboanga Sibugay has been unclogged after the removal of some 50 tons of water hyacinth in a river clean-up last week spearheaded by the local government unit.
In its social media page, Ipil Safe, Ipil Strong said the river clean-up was the first of four series along Sanito River.
The activity was participated in by the volunteers from DENR-CENRO Kabasalan, Philippine Coast Guard, 902nd PNP Maritime Sibugay Province, Ipil Municipal Police Station, AFP Reserve Command, Barangay Local Government Unit of Poblacion, Barangay Local Government Unit of Sanito, Summer Job Interns, MJ Mari Construction, Councilor Farida Dangpalan, Sangguniang Bayan Secretary Estrellita Eguia, and the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO).
Mayor Amy Olegario thanked all the partner organizations and volunteers who helped in cleaning Sanito River.
The volunteers had pledged to return next week to continue with the river clean-up.
It was the first time an organized river clean-up was done to alleviate the river’s dismal condition.
The river, which lies between barangays Poblacion and Sanito, has been plagued with siltation due to human-made activities such as dumping of human wastes, and quarrying.
The first attempt to rehabilitate the dying river was in the 1990s after the Sangguniang Bayan passed the Save Our Sanito River ordinance authored by former Councilor Eleanor Funda Sardual. It was not implemented, however. (Mindanao Sun)
