SULTAN KUDARAT – A seven-year-old child killed his elder sister with a home-made shotgun they thought was a toy in Sultan Kudarat town Wednesday.
The 10-year-old victim, Angel Bliss Pututan of Barangay Palavilla in Lutayan town in Sultan Kudarat, died on the spot from pellet wounds in the upper chest.
Celia Avanzado, chairperson of Barangay Palavilla, in an interview with reporters, said the girl and her brother were playing with a gauge 12 shotgun. The siblings found the firearm in their shanty.
The shotgun went off hitting the girl in the chest, killing her on the spot.
Police Col. Noel Kinazo, director of the Sultan Kudarat provincial police, said Thursday he has ordered the confiscation of the shotgun.
About half a million of unlicensed firearms in Mindanao are in the hands of civilians, International Alert said. Civilians outgun security forces and licensed security agencies at a ration of 2 to 1.
Kinazo also urged residents of Sultan Kudarat province to carefully keep licensed guns they possess.
He called on the public to surrender undocumented firearms to avoid prosecution and imprisonment.
